Grades and Feedback

View grades and instructor feedback in Canvas and with Notifications

Assignment Grades

Grades can be viewed through the Grades tool in a course or from the View Grades button on the main dashboard. Remember that individual instructors will differ in how and when they do their grading and submit grades in Canvas.

Grades in concluded courses may be found by going to Courses > All Courses in the global navigation and scrolling down to Past Enrollments.

If you want to receive notifications when an assignment grade is posted or changed or when there are submission comments posted, you can select that in Notification settings.

Canvas also has a feature that lets you view your grades based on What-If Scores, scenarios you set up to know how grades will be affected by upcoming or resubmitted assignments.

Remember that grades in Canvas are provisional and do not necessarily reflect the grades that instructors will record in OPUS.

Finding Comments and Feedback

In addition to numeric and letter grades, instructors can also leave qualitative feedback when grading. But it isn't always obvious where to find them. Here are a few tips:

  1. If an instructor leaves an overall comment when grading or results and comments in a grading rubric, you can find these in the Grades tool in the course. Both Comments and Rubric Feedback are indicated with icons to the right of the assignment score.
  2. If an instructor leaves inline comments and/or annotations when grading your assignment, you can find this feedback by navigating from the Grades tool to the Assignment Details and then clicking View Feedback.
  3. Instructors may also leave comments on Quizzes. As with assignment comments, these are indicated with a Comments icon in the Grades list.
