Sandbox Courses

Sandbox courses are for testing, development, and banking reusable course materials. Sandbox courses belong to the person identified in the course ID (by NetID) and course name (by preferred name). Sandbox courses may be affiliated to a specific school so that integrated external tools licensed by that school are available.

All teachers of record for courses listed in OPUS receive a separate sandbox for each school with which their courses are affiliated. Teachers, assistants, and staff may request sandbox courses as needed.

School Specific Tools

Some schools have tools integrated with Canvas for which only their teachers are licensed. Specific schools' IT support groups provide information about using these tools. The affiliation of sandbox courses with schools allows us to make the same integrated external tools that teachers find in OPUS-listed courses available in their sandbox(es).

Because teachers whose courses are listed in more than one school have multiple sandbox courses, we recommend that they develop course materials in the sandbox affiliated with the school in which the materials will be used. For example, when building content for a course to be taught in Emory College of Arts and Sciences, teachers should use the sandbox course with "EC" in the name and ID.

School Abbreviations

These are the abbreviations we use in Canvas sandbox course names and IDs.

  • CST = Candler School of Theology
  • EC = Emory College of Arts and Sciences
  • EU = Emory University (not affiliated with a specific school)
  • GBS = Goizueta Business School
  • LAW = School of Law
  • LGS = Laney Graduate School
  • OX = Oxford College
  • RSPH = Rollins School of Public Health
  • SOM = School of Medicine
  • SON = Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing

Retention

We retain sandbox courses indefinitely, but we may delete disused sandbox courses. By disused we mean either:

  • No active user is enrolled in the course (this typically means the owner has left the institution); or
  • The course contains no added content, the owner is not an instructor of record in the current year, and the course was created more than two years earlier.
