Respondus Lockdown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser is an application that prevents other applications from running while a student is taking a quiz in Canvas. It is intended to assist proctoring in a controlled environment, such as a classroom with students using their personal devices. Lockdown Browser is not a remote proctoring service or a tool intended for high-stakes remote exams.

How To Use Lockdown Browser

Instructors

We recommend that all instructors provide a LockDown Browser "test" quiz that students can use to verify that LockDown Browser is working properly on their machine.

Step 1: Add LockDown Browser to course navigation

Step 2: Open the LockDown Browser Dashboard

Step 3: Enable LockDown Browser for a quiz
Step 4: Configure advanced settings (optional)
Step 5: Save settings and notify students
Step 6: Create a practice quiz

Students

Do not use eduroam or Emory Guest while taking a quiz with LockDown Browser. Be sure you are connected to EmoryUnplugged before launching LDB.

Step 1: Download Emory's dedicated Lockdown Browser here.

Step 2: Install Lockdown Browser.

Step 3: Launch Lockdown Browser and close any programs requested.

Step 4: Log into Canvas and navigate to the exam or quiz.

Step 5: Take the exam or quiz.

Step 6: Close Lockdown Browser after completion.

Tips

  • Always keep the LockDown Browser program and your computer up-to-date. If updates are available, install them before taking an exam. Don't wait until it's time to take a real exam to find out that LockDown Browser isn't working on your machine.
  • Make sure the correct LockDown Browser version is installed. You must use the Emory link as versions are specific to each institution.
  • Make sure that your computer is fully charged before starting an exam.
  • Close all other applications before launching LockDown Browser. LDB will only close applications that could interfere with the security of locking down the machine. Performance may still be negatively impacted by running applications that are still running, additional browser tabs and browser windows.
  • Respondus LockDown Browser problems can also be due to one of the following:
    • Firewall conflicts
    • Anti-Virus software conflicts
    • Loss of internet connectivity > send teacher a message and try to reconnect and resume exam
